Passenger arrivals to Ghana declined in July 2025, according to the January 2026 Monetary Policy Report released by the Bank of Ghana.
Passenger arrivals
Arrivals fell by 8.5% year-on-year to 111,631 in July 2025, down from 121,995 recorded in July 2024.
However, on a month-on-month basis, arrivals rose by 3.0% compared to June 2025, suggesting some short-term recovery in travel activity.
Cumulatively, for the first seven months of 2025, total passenger arrivals at the international airport and land borders stood at 722,020, slightly below the 724,412 recorded during the same period in 2024. The marginal dip indicates relative stability in overall travel flows despite the July slowdown.
International trade at harbours improves
In contrast, international trade activity at Ghana’s two main ports, Tema Harbour and Takoradi Harbour recorded significant growth.
Measured by laden container traffic (both inbound and outbound):
July 2025: Total container traffic increased by 28.9% year-on-year to 75,183, up from 58,330 in July 2024.
Cumulative (Jan–July 2025): Container traffic rose by 23.8% to 497,292, compared with 401,845 during the same period in 2024.
What the data suggests
The figures point to a mixed performance in external sector activity:
Passenger travel showed a slight contraction year-on-year but remained broadly stable cumulatively.
Trade activity, however, strengthened considerably, reflecting improved import-export flows and potentially stronger economic momentum.
The divergence highlights resilient trade performance even as travel activity experiences short-term fluctuations
