The ongoing strike by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) has brought local governance in the Kwadaso Municipality to a standstill, with the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Eric Assibey, expressing deep concern over the situation. As the industrial action enters its third day, essential services across municipal departments have been severely impacted, slowing down operations and disrupting the delivery of critical services to the community.
According to Mr. Assibey, the strike has had a widespread impact on the municipality, affecting various departments and services.
“Strikes shouldn’t be encouraged in any workplace at all. In fact, at this municipality, we’re lucky the cleaners are funded through Internal Generated Funds, so they’re not part of the strike; otherwise, we might not have access to the washrooms. If someone says the strike hasn’t had any negative impact on metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies, that’s not true,”he said, highlighting the severity of the situation. The MCE's comments come as the strike continues to paralyze municipal operations, with many workers staying away from their posts.
Impact on Essential Services
The strike has had a significant impact on essential services in the municipality, including revenue collection, public health, and sanitation. With many workers staying away from their posts, the municipality is struggling to deliver critical services to the community. Dr. Ama Owusu, a public health expert, noted that the strike has disrupted immunization programs and other critical health services, putting the health and well-being of residents at risk.
“The strike has severe implications for public health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly. We urge the parties involved to find a resolution as soon as possible to mitigate the impact on essential services,”she said.
The strike has also affected revenue collection, with many revenue collection points closed or operating at reduced capacity. Mr. Kwame Mensah, a local business owner, noted that the strike has disrupted his business operations, making it difficult for him to pay taxes and other fees.
“The strike has affected my business significantly, as I rely on the municipality to provide essential services. I urge the authorities to find a solution to the strike as soon as possible to minimize the impact on businesses and the community,”he said.
Efforts to Resolve the Strike
Despite the challenges posed by the strike, the municipality is working to find a resolution to the dispute. The MCE, Eric Assibey, has been engaging with CLOGSAG officials to find a solution to the strike. Mr. Assibey noted that the municipality is committed to finding a resolution to the dispute, but emphasized that the strike is having a significant impact on municipal operations.
“We are working tirelessly to find a solution to the strike, but it is essential that CLOGSAG officials understand the impact of their actions on the community. We urge them to return to work while we negotiate a resolution to the dispute,”he said.
Other stakeholders, including the Ghanaian government, have also been engaged in efforts to resolve the strike. Ms. Adelaide Anno-Kumi, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, noted that the government is working to address the concerns of CLOGSAG members, while also ensuring that essential services are maintained.
“We are committed to finding a resolution to the strike, but it is essential that all parties work together to find a solution. We urge CLOGSAG members to return to work while we negotiate a resolution to the dispute,”she said.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the ongoing strike by CLOGSAG has had a significant impact on local governance in the Kwadaso Municipality, disrupting essential services and slowing down operations. While efforts are being made to resolve the dispute, it is essential that all parties work together to find a solution. The community is urged to remain calm and patient as the authorities work to resolve the strike. As Mr. Assibey noted,
“We are committed to finding a resolution to the strike, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that essential services are maintained. We urge the community to bear with us as we work to resolve this dispute,”the municipality is hopeful that a resolution will be found soon, and normal operations will resume. The situation will continue to be monitored, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
