The stage for the 2028 General Election is beginning to take shape as the National Council of Patrons of the New Patriotic Party paid a high-profile visit to the private residence of the party’s newly elected flagbearer, Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, on Friday, 13th February 2026.
The delegation, made up of the party’s most experienced members, formally congratulated Dr Bawumia on his “emphatic” win in the recent presidential primaries, which they say reflects the full confidence of the party’s rank and file in his leadership.

In a strategic display of support, the Council used the Accra meeting to pledge its full backing for Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign. Beyond formal endorsements, the Patrons reaffirmed their core mandate: mobilising key resources essential for a high-energy and effective electioneering effort.
Akosua Frema Osei Opare, the immediate past Chief of Staff and Chairperson of the Council, emphasised that the group’s elite membership is fully prepared for deployment in support of the campaign.

A Call for “Grassroots to National” Healing
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the Council issued a cautionary note on party unity. They stressed an “urgent need” for a comprehensive reconciliation process that reaches every level of the New Patriotic Party, from the grassroots to the national executive.

Bawumia’s Response: The Reconciliation Committee Looms
In accepting the Council’s support, Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia recognised the “wealth of experience” present and pledged to leverage their expertise. Responding to concerns about internal friction, the flagbearer announced the imminent formation of a formal Reconciliation Committee.
“Very soon, a reconciliation committee will be put in place to start the process towards ensuring a peaceful and united New Patriotic Party, that is ready to resell power in 2028,” Dr Bawumia stated, highlighting his commitment to party unity.
