The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has advised party members against blaming President John Dramani Mahama if they are not appointed as ministers under the new administration.
Addressing party supporters during a tour of the Central Region, Asiedu Nketiah explained that the decision to restrict ministerial appointments to 60 was a collective position adopted by the party ahead of assuming office.
He noted that the NDC had strongly criticised the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government for appointing 125 ministers, describing the number as excessive and a strain on public finances.
“It was our collective decision that Akufo-Addo’s 125 ministerial appointments were too many,” he told party faithful. “Our government will make 60 appointments, so don’t blame Mahama if you don’t get one.”
According to him, the cap on appointments reflects the party’s commitment to running a lean and efficient administration.
Asiedu Nketiah stressed that the reduction is part of broader efforts to promote fiscal discipline and ensure value for money in governance.
He emphasised that the move should not be interpreted as a personal decision by President Mahama but rather a strategic policy choice endorsed by the party to reduce government expenditure and improve efficiency.
The NDC had consistently argued that the size of the previous administration placed unnecessary pressure on the national budget. The new limit on ministerial positions, he said, is intended to demonstrate the party’s resolve to operate a more cost-effective government structure.
